Goolwa Wharf Precinct Project construction works get underway
This week work will commence to realise Council’s vision for the Goolwa Wharf Precinct to be ‘a place to experience a vibrant riverfront township enriched with culture and history’. Stage One of the Goolwa Wharf Precinct Project construction works will focus on the iconic Signal Point building, with works to include a total roof replacement, installation of new heating and cooling, and painting. Fencing will be erected around the building to create a contained work site whilst building works are underway to ensure worker and visitor safety.
Access to building 1, that currently houses the temporarily relocated Wharf Barrel Shed will be maintained via the existing access point on the wharf side of Signal Point and at the rear, via the BF Laurie Lane entrance.
Alexandrina Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Nigel Morris said “This is an exciting time for the Alexandrina community. A lot of work has gone into the planning and design of this project, which involves building works, landscaping, wharf construction and civil works to achieve the much-needed renewal of the heritage listed precinct assets.
“To emphasise the scale of this project, the Goolwa Wharf decking construction will involve enough wood if lined up end-to-end it would reach from Goolwa to Middleton and halfway back again, some 9,030 linear meters of timber.
“The project will be delivered over several stages that will involve works in different parts of the precinct as the project progresses. Some access changes will be necessary at times, but there will be onsite signage to ensure visitors can find their way around easily. “The wharf will continue to be a drawcard for visitors to Goolwa and a gathering place for locals during construction and is definitely open for business during the redevelopment,” said Nigel Morris.
Access will be maintained to all Goolwa Wharf Precinct businesses during construction, and we encourage locals and visitors to continue to support these businesses during the redevelopment.
