Why enter the awards?
The awards are Alexandrina Council’s premier heritage event that highlights best practice in heritage centric projects across a number of categories.
The awards attract media interest, ensuring that the industry, government and community recognise and commend finalists and winners that demonstrate innovation and best practice in celebrating the heritage of the Alexandrina Council Region. As well as showcasing the very best of heritage practices, the awards also educate the wider community about the importance of conserving and activating our local heritage. Projects are featured in the Alexandrina Council Newsletter, website and other promotional material.
Nominating for an Award
Nominations are open to the members of the community and members of the Heritage Advisory Committee.
Nominations can be made at any time during the year however to be eligible for each year’s award event nominations must be received 6 weeks prior to the date of the awards event. The awards event will always be held in May as part of the SA History Festival. If nominations are received after this cut-off date then they will be considered in the next year’s event.
Nominations for the Heritage Awards closed on Friday 5 April 2024.
Nominations received after this date will be eligible for the 2025 Heritage Awards, to be held in May 2025.
Terms and Conditions
Entries can only be considered under one category.
Any entries involving works that require development approval must have received development approval.
If nominating a property that you are not the owner of then owner approval must be sought and evidence shown within the application.
Projects completed within three years of the nomination date are eligible.
Applications must address all relevant criteria and be accompanied by supporting digital photographs that are able be used for the awards event as well as any other promotional opportunities that may arise.
The judges may choose to recognise more than one winner in each category and one or more commendations. The judges may also reserve the right to not select a winner or commendation.
Nominations can be residential, rural, commercial and/or public projects.
A building or place must be within the Alexandrina Council and either a State or Local Heritage Listed Place/area or a building/place, either urban or rural, which has a clear link to the local heritage of the town or district, demonstrated by a historic/heritage significance statement.

Nominations in this category can be a project, business or product that enriches and/or improves a heritage experience by helping visitors to develop a strong sense of understanding and appreciation of a place, area and/or the region.
The nomination may be a tour, historic trail, festival, event, commemorative event, exhibition, a form of accommodation or commercial activity, cruise, performance, educational activity or program, interpretation works or signage, community engagement program, museum display or interactive experience, website or app.
This category recognises a commitment the conservation of a State or Local Heritage Listed Place or a building/place, either urban or rural, which has historic value or character relevant to the town or district. The aim of conservation is to retain the cultural significance of a place.
Projects will be assessed based on how the works conserve the heritage integrity of the place/building as well as their contribution to the streetscape. Any local partnerships fostered/supported (eg. the use local stone masons/trades) will also be considered.
A project can be nominated in one of two sections within this category:
a) Small Scale Projects/Works
For project/works with a total cost not exceeding $50,000.
b) Large Scale Projects/Works
For project/works with a total cost exceeding $50,000.
This category recognises the ability to repurpose a heritage or historic building/site to ensure that it is retained and used in a productive way.
The adaptation should be sympathetic to the building’s heritage fabric, celebrate and where possible provide interpretation on the heritage of the building/site and any previous uses or occupiers. The new use of the building/site should also exhibit a level of innovation and creativity.
This category recognises the importance of gardens in enhancing the character of a heritage building or place and its positive impact on a street or area. Nominations could include a garden and its layout, a fence, hedge or even artwork. The identified project must have connection to the heritage/historic significance or the era of the building/place.

This category recognises a person(s) or organisation that has undertaken local historic research and documented it as either a digital story, oral histories, an open day, conference or symposium, video, film, book or publication.
The Lorraine Pomery Service to Heritage Award recognises a person who has had significant contribution to the preservation of and advocacy for heritage within the Alexandrina region. Lorraine was a pioneer for heritage conservation and documentation with specific interest in the Port Elliot area where she resided until she passed away in 2022. This may be through invaluable research and documentation, contribution to a local historical society or through ongoing volunteer work in the heritage sector.
