Following a recent engineering inspection, Council has had to restrict access to two shelters in Freeman's Knob Reserve on The Strand in Port Elliot.

As a temporary solution, Council has cordoned off the shelters with bunting to restrict public access.

The engineering assessment has raised some concerns about the safety of the structures and recommended their removal.

Council will assess the current location of the shelters and will engage with the surrounding community on options for replacement or relocation within Freeman's Knob Reserve.

Details regarding the future community consultation on the shelters will be provided on this page. Council encourages the community to sign-up for any updates.

A report on the replacement of shelters in Continental Park, Port Elliot, was received by Council Members at their 16 September General Council Meeting.

Council approved an adjustment to the 2024/25 capital budget to complete urgent works on the two shelters in Continental Park.

Council deferred the allocation of $80,000 from the Recreation and Open Space Capital Renewal Program for the Freeman Knob Lookout - Wall Renewal Project in Port Elliot to assist in covering the costs of replacing the shelters.

The wall renewal project will be included in the draft 2025/26 Annual Business Plan and Budget for consideration.

Council has contacted the family of the late Mrs Abbott regarding the shelter with the memorial seat.

We will continue to engage with the Abbott family regarding the shelter replacement.

Council will also engage further with the National Trust of Port Elliot and the Port Elliot Town and Foreshore Association (PETAFA) regarding the replacement of the replica old croquet shelter.

Council will then engage with the broader community about the shelter replacements following the outcomes of those discussions with community groups and the Abbott family.

Council intends to replace the shelters using as much of the existing materials as possible due to their historical and memorial significance.
