Progress on Modifications, SMART Lighting, and Community Engagement

9 August 2023

Please see below updates regarding Clayton Bay lighting and Dark Sky Accreditation.

Lighting Update

Since our last update (Friday 23 June 2023), the Council team have successfully worked with SAPN to de-energise 33 lights in the Pelican Waters estate.

Further light modifications have been made to energised lights including the application of 3 of light shields (optical glare visors). Council is currently gathering further data to monitor, measure and analyse the light spread of the newly activated lights to ensure light spread is meeting the low-light ambitions and expectations of the Clayton Bay community.

SMART Lighting

On Monday 10 July 2023, Council adopted the Annual Business Plan and Budget 2023/24 that includes an allocation of $25,000 for SMART lighting in Clayton Bay. Council is collaborating with SA Power Networks on the installation of SMART lighting to further reduce the impact of light spillage on the community. This technology from SA Power Networks will not be available for installation until after November 2023. Further details to come.

In-person Update to the Community

Council are liaising with the Clayton Bay Community Association to formalise the format for the next in-person update in Clayton Bay. Further details following the CBCA AGM on 12 August 2023.

Dark Sky Accreditation

There is a now a community-led Clayton Bay Dark Skies and Lighting Action Group. Since the Information Session held in June, Council has received registrations of interest to join a committee to explore Dark Sky accreditation. All of those that registered have been invited to connect directly with this group. If you would like to learn more, please reach out to cbdsag@googlegroups.com

We look forward to continuing to work with the Clayton Bay residents and community groups in the coming months.
