About the project
Alexandrina Council is embarking on a biodiversity improvement project in Milang in a Council Reserve known as Jupiter Lyons Park. The project is a response to Council Resolution (C24592) endorsed at the 18 November 2024 Ordinary Council Meeting.
Milang has been identified in Alexandrina Council's Tree Canopy Benchmark Study as one of the townships in our region with a low canopy cover.
Works to prepare the site are underway. Second Nature Conservancy has been engaged by Council to help deliver the biodiversity improvement project.
Plants for the project will be grown by our local community nursery in Goolwa based on the following criteria:- Locally native and appropriate to enhance biodiversity at the site (variety of species, strata and functions)
- Informed by, and complementary to, successful earlier adjacent plantings on the Jupiter Lyon Reserve
- Inclusive of appropriately spaced overstorey species to increase the tree canopy.
Second Nature
Conservancy, in collaboration with Council, will undertake two
community biodiversity planting events in the reserve during the winter months of June/July 2026, following the first significant rain events.
