Background – How we got here
A Middleton resident conducted a petition requesting a skate park within Middleton in which received 350 signatures. This petition was forwarded to Council as well as a deputation been undertaken at the Council meeting on 18 March 2024.
At the Council meeting 18 March 2024, $20,000 was endorsed from the Village Conversation outcomes budget to undertake a concept design for a skatepark within Middleton.
It has been noted that at the 2023 Village Conversations, a skate park upgrade in Middleton was one of the most popular ideas.
Been March and July 2024 Council have been working with a mixed user focus group and schools from Goolwa and Victor Harbour on facilitating a concept ready for broader engagement.
Engagement to date
Council have undertaken two focus group meetings with mixed users between April and June 2024, on top of these meetings Council have undertaken engagement with schools located between Goolwa to Victor Harbour. All the feedback collated throughout the focus group meetings and school engagements have helped form the current draft concept design.
Location
Proposed location of the Middleton Skate park is at the end of Mill Terrace, Middleton. This site was chosen due to it's size (ability to place a full size skate park), It's current terrain, openness with 360 degree of visibility, access connections and supporting amenities with a public toilet close by.
Lighting
Lighting is not currently included in this draft concept design. But during the construction phase future proofing will be undertaken so that lighting can be included if deemed necessary at a later stage with further community engagement.
Carparking
Carparking has been considered as part of this project and location was chosen due to carpark facilities already located near the public toilets at the end of Mill Terrace and on the corner of Padman Cresent and Esplanade, Middleton. There is also excess land that can be utilised for future parking and the possibility of formalising parking along Mill Terrace if required.
Funding
Currently Council have funding to undertake a concept design for community engagement which was approved at the council meeting held on 18th March 2024. Once community engagement is completed a report will be forwarded back to Council with outcomes of the community engagement to help facilitate a final concept design. Funding will then need to be sort to undertake a final design ready for construction where Council will be in a position to investigate grant funding options to undertake construction.
