$7 million Federal grant to deliver Langhorne Creek Discovery Trail

Alexandrina Council and Langhorne Creek industry groups are thrilled to announce they have secured $7 million from the Australian Government to make the Langhorne Creek Discovery Trail in this premier wine region a reality.

The $7.06 million grant to Council was announced yesterday as part of the Government’s $400 million ‘regional Precincts and Partnerships Program (rPPP)’ to support transformative investment in regional, rural and remote Australia.

The rPPP grant will fully fund the construction of the 2.8km trail, which is the culmination of many years of planning and advocacy by the Langhorne Creek community, driven by a partnership including Langhorne Creek Grape and Wine Association, Langhorne Creek Hub, the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal Corporation, and Alexandrina Council.

The Council-endorsed concept design for the multi-purpose trail stretches from the intersection of Kent Town Road and Langhorne Creek Road near Bremerton Wines, it winds through the township, including Memorial Park and Frank Potts Reserve, and finishes at Bleasdale Winery.

About the project

The intent of the Langhorne Creek Discovery Trail (LCDT) is to create a fit for purpose trail that provides interesting and accessible ways to enable visitors and locals access to wineries, attractions and parks safely by both foot and on bikes. The creation of the LCDT will enhance the visitor experience, increase local community access, and encourage tourism in an environmentally sensitive way.

The LCDT has the potential to widen the demographic and support the many travellers who have a bike hitched to their car, caravan or RV. It will increase visitation, which in turn will heighten spend within the local community and region.

The project contains three major elements:

  • Trail infrastructure build that consists of a multi-use pathway and interpretive signage providing a way for tourists to navigate a central 2.8km stretch safely and efficiently
  • Working with industry on the development of saleable tourism products that could include cellar door experiences, bike hire, tours, indigenous experiences, nature based experiences, and history of the Langhorne Creek region.
  • Marketing the discovery trail
