Alexandrina Council has recently undertaken Bridge condition inspections within the district. Following this assessment, concerns were raised about the condition of the 2 bridges along Braewood Road, Sandergrove. Council engaged an Independent Consultant to conduct a structural engineering assessment of these bridges.
Outcomes of the structural assessment
The northernmost bridge
Reinforced concrete bridge
Still fit for purpose
Some defects identified that will require repair.
The southernmost bridge
Comprised of steel girders with a timber deck, originally constructed in 1948.
Identified that the timber deck has become rotten and cracked in addition to the steel beams suffering significant surface corrosion
Recommendation from the Structural Engineer is for the bridge to be closed to all traffic until the timber planks are either fixed or the entire bridge is replaced.
Road Closure
A full road closure will be required at the southernmost bridge with the installation of Bridge Closed signs along Braewood Road and surrounding roads.
What's next?
Council is obtaining cost estimates from the Structural Engineer for the repair of both bridges.
Once these have been obtained then Council will have a better indication on the cost implications of these works and will be able to establish a plan moving forward. It is Council’s intention to have these bridges remediated, and for the southernmost bridge, reopened as soon as practicable, subject to funding being confirmed.
