Consultation has concluded

The RSL Port Elliot Sub Branch, previously owned the land at 10 The Strand, Port Elliot. The property comprises of the RSL Building and the Old Guide Hall building.

In 1996, the Sub-Branch gifted the land and all of its improvements to Council, on the condition that the RSL Building was activated as a public hire space and the RSL could continue to use the RSL building when needed.

Although the sub-branch have significant contents, furniture and permanent items in the RSL building for the purpose of public display, they do not have exclusive use of the RSL Building as part of the conditions of the gifting of the premises to Council.

The sub-branch has approached Council seeking to Lease the Old Guide Hall as an office and meeting space for social and recreational activities, including welfare support for ex-servicemen and their families.

How long is the Lease proposed for?

An initial term of 5 years is proposed, with the option to renew for a further 5 years at expiry.

Fee

The annual rental fee for a Community lease is peppercorn ($1.00) per annum. This fee is in accordance with Council’s Lease and Licence Policy and Annual Fees and Charges.

Why can’t they just use the RSL Building?

The ongoing availability of the RSL building to the community through Council hire agreements remains supported by the Sub-branch however, in practical terms, the non-exclusive nature of this agreement restricts the group from ownership of a private space available as needed for their daily activities.

Further, the use of the Guide Hall provides the Sub-Branch with the much-needed flexibility and unrestricted access to expand member activities in a dedicated private space, without affecting the community’s use of the RSL Building next door or the requirement to book a space in advance, set up and pack up following each time of use.
