Update
The draft plan will be presented at the 17 June Council Meeting for endorsement.
While our coast is highly valued and a key part of our identity, living along the coast means living with the risk of coastal flooding and erosion. This is why Council adopted a Coastal Adaptation Study in 2021.
The Study found that the Goolwa Channel and the Mundoo Channel are two areas most at risk from coastal flooding.
These areas already experience flooding during storm surge events, and this is projected to increase as the climate changes and sea levels rise. This means more people may be affected more often.
Council is proactively responding to this risk by supporting the preparation of a Community Coastal Flood Emergency Plan for the Goolwa and Mundoo Channels. This Plan will outline the actions the local community can take before, during and after coastal flood events to reduce their impact.
Council values and recognises the role of the community in shaping our future.

Community Workshops
Council values and recognises the role of the community in shaping our future.
We invited residents, ratepayers and stakeholders from the Goolwa and Mundoo Channels to attend three community workshops to get involved in the preparation of the draft Community Coastal Flood Emergency Plan.
We encouraged community members to register for each workshop as each covered different topics. The slides from the presentations and a summary of the activity results are available for the first two workshops.
Summary of Workshop 1 held 8 February 2024
Topics discussed
Introduction to community emergency management planning
How will flooding impact you and your property now and in the future?
Over 45 residents and stakeholders attended the first workshop.
In February 2021, Council adopted the Coastal Adaption Study that investigated how people, the natural environment and built assets might be impacted by rising seas levels over coming decades so that Council and other stakeholders, such as the Government of South Australia and private landholders, can plan for the future.
