Review of Rating Policy

Alexandrina Council Review of Rating Policy

This consultation has concluded.

Join Us in delivering a fair, equitable and responsible rating system to the Alexandrina community!

Alexandrina Council is seeking your feedback for the following proposed changes that have the potential to change the rating system for Alexandrina Council in 2012/2013.

"The last Rating Review with the community in 2009 resulted in the differential rate for Primary Production remaining unchanged. In this review we are proposing more significant changes in how we collect rates from our community and how this will impact our community. I encourage you to have your say." Mayor Kym McHugh, 16 January 2012

Council Proposes:

- the continued use of capital values for rating purposes

- differential rates to be based on land-use with only primary producers continuing to pay a reduced % than the full rate and vacant land to pay a higher rate than improved land

- to change from a minimum rate model to a fixed charge rate model

- the continued use of rebates to be applied on a needs basis

- extend application of rates capping for non-resident ratepayers

Rates still remain the main income for local government. What kinds of revenue ideas or issues interest you more broadly?

For example, long term financial sustainability of community and local government? Access to Federal and State funding sources? Impact of Federal and State taxes, levies etc?
