Did you know that local government is not mentioned in the Australian Constitution? The Australian Government have committed to holding a referendum on this issue.
Alexandrina Council are pleased to promote the Australian Government consultation on recognition of Local Government in the Australian Constitution by its Expert Panel.
Its not too late to fill in a quick survey here.
The Expert Panel will report to the Australian Government by the end of the year.
Alexandrina Council resolved at its meeting of 17 October 2011 to:
- approve the proposed submission, primarily supporting financial recognition of local government in the Australian Constitution;
- express a preference for recognition of local government in the Preamble of the Australian Constitution (if such a measure is proposed in the referendum); and
- undertake awareness-raising among community of the issue.
